What do you think of when you hear the word “juggler?” Images of children’s parties and carnivals spring to mind, or perhaps one also think of clowns, desperately scrambling in an attempt to keep the attention of a disinterested audience. Who among us hasn’t seen (and probably been bored to tears by) such an exhibition? Yes, jugglers have become personae-non-gratae in the entertainment world, the label “juggler” almost an epithet.
Then along comes Jeff Civillico to effectively decimate those images, creating in their place brand new ones full of the contemporary humor and wit he has quickly become renowned for. He juggles, to be sure, but you can no more define him as merely a “juggler” than you can define a diamond as merely a “rock.” With an entertainer as exciting, fresh and high-energy as Civillico, who really cares about definitions anyway? He’s full of surprises and contradictions, all of which add up to a top-notch experience for audiences, worldwide.
One contradiction is provided by way of Civillico’s upbringing. From a family full of prestigious, academically accomplished Ivy Leaguers, and himself a Georgetown alumnus, you might expect to find him in the boardroom rather than on stage. In fact, it was at Harvard, at the age of eleven, when Jeff first experienced the rush of performing for a crowd. “It was during a family trip to visit my oldest brother, who was attending Harvard. As we walked through Harvard Square, I was asked to volunteer – to participate with one of the street performers. He spun a plate on my finger, and from that moment on, I wanted to be a performer.” By the age of twelve, he had his first professional gig.
Jeff was lucky to have a mentor, a family friend who was also an entertainer, who didn’t believe in following a scripted, predictable show. “’What are we going to do? What’s the show going to be like,’ I would ask, but he’d just say ‘relax – chill out. We’re going to do a show,’ and that’s exactly what we would do.” The training was invaluable, and as a result, Civillico now also has the uncanny ability to make each and every show fresh. “I allow stuff to happen. I don’t hide behind music or choreography, or a script.”
Though he’s got stellar “technical” chops, Jeff’s free-form style is what keeps audiences on the edges of their seats. He’s a favorite at corporate events, and is repeatedly asked back. Event Coordinators and Talent Buyers know they can depend on Civillico also because he’s squeaky clean, so he can be trusted to entertain the most conservative audiences – a fact born out by his numerous performances for Disney. “I care about the experience that the audience has, and I want them to have a care-free experience; my show is very clean. I am committed to clean comedy..”
Instantly engaging, Civillico’s genuineness and charm shines through. He’s loaded with personality, but it doesn’t hurt one bit that he’s also very easy on the eyes, and in tip-top physical condition. His sinewy physique serves him well on stage, allowing him to make the physically demanding show look like a piece of cake. Where other performers would be huffing and puffing halfway through, and probably completely passed out by the end, Jeff Civillico darts, spins and squats – and he does so with an impish grin.
Watching Jeff Civillico perform is like watching a diamond sparkle in the light; he simply is that brilliant. So put away your preconceived ideas and antiquated notions, and let this muti-faceted, exceptional entertainer dazzle you!
