Matt Marcy’s name is synonymous with “quality,” because he understands the importance of giving an excellent performance every single time. “If you hire a band and the band is terrible, you don’t say ‘aw, that was awful; I’m never hiring a band again!’ But if you hire a magician and the magician is terrible, you say ‘that’s it; I’m never hiring a magician again!’” Always giving the very best performance is important to Matt Marcy, not only for the sake of his audiences, but for the sake of his fellow magicians, as well.
Marcy is an original in a sea of pretenders. Sure, he could be mediocre like so many working magicians today, since as he explains, “most people aren’t exposed to real magic, so they don’t really know what real, quality magic looks like.” But Marcy respects and appreciates his audiences, so half-stepping isn’t good enough. Asked what sets him apart from other working magicians today, aside from his insistence on quality, Marcy replied “some magicians take themselves and their tricks very seriously, but I like to focus on fun. My material is structured around comedy. It’s like a party where I’m the host, and I want it to be a good time so people are energized, laughing, and at the same time, being amazed.”
He accomplishes his goal easily, and is well respected among his peers. He doesn’t rely on tired, run-of-the-mill tricks which have been done and seen a thousand times before. Instead, he has created his own, original tricks which keep audiences excited and full of enthusiasm, on the edge of their seats waiting for their chance to participate.
Luckily, they don’t have to wait long; Marcy has brilliantly reinvented the childhood favorite “Mad Libs” game, which he plays with the audiences. Not only is it tremendously entertaining and hilarious – he actually predicts what the answers are going to be, but it’s also a clever way to customize each show according to the client, and as every talent buyer and/or show coordinator knows, tie-ins are always impressive, a lot of fun, and a good way to score kudos with “higher ups” in the company.
One delightful advantage to Marcy’s show is that he doesn’t rely on a lot of props, which means he’s extremely flexible, and which also allows him to really connect with his audiences, which is always his objective. Another advantage is a heavy use of music and sound cues, adding another element of fun. And, since his entire program is computer-run, he’s self-contained. In layman’s terms, that means he can set up easily and deliver a spectacular show practically anywhere, from smallest banquet or board room to a gigantic arena.
